On Restraint
Why the House removes rather than adds, and what restraint asks of a fragrance once it is worn.

Addition is easy. Removal is the decision.
A composition can always be made louder. Another material can always be added, another facet raised, another effect introduced to make the first ten seconds more impressive. Almost nothing in the process resists it. Addition flatters the person making the decision, because every new element feels like evidence of effort.
Removal offers no such comfort. Taking something out means accepting that the work is judged on what survives, not on how much of it there is. It requires the House to decide what the fragrance is actually for — and then to defend that decision against everything that would merely make it busier.
A signature is not what you notice first. It is what remains when everything else has been taken away.
Restraint is a promise about the wearer.
A fragrance that shouts arrives before the person does. It announces, it explains, it performs. Whatever else it achieves, it takes the room's attention away from the one wearing it, and hands it to the composition instead.
The alternative is harder to build and quieter to experience. A restrained fragrance stays close, resolves slowly, and becomes recognisable through repetition rather than volume. It is read as presence rather than as a product. That is the standard the House works to — and the reason the ingredient direction is held to discipline rather than accumulation.
The same discipline applies to the object.
Restraint is not only an olfactive position. It governs the weight of the glass, the behaviour of the closure, the amount of print on a label, the depth of a case. Every one of those decisions is an opportunity to add something decorative, and every one of them is judged the same way: does this make the object clearer, or only busier?
